Finalize a strong carbon cap-and-trade system that Ontario can take to the international climate summit in Copenhagen. This system should set the standard for Canada by embracing wide coverage and realistic prices that result in Ontario meeting its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.
Putting a price on carbon is the only way we are going to come to grips with our impact on a rapidly unravelling climate. A system that auctions the majority of carbon credits and that covers the widest possible range of industries and other emission sources will be the most successful in helping us achieve our critically important greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and thereby will help keep global temperatures from crossing into even more dangerous territory. By pressing ahead with a strong carbon cap and trade plan in conjunction with its partners in the Western Climate Initiative and Quebec, Ontario can avoid being held hostage to the federal government’s desire to protect the big oil companies of the Alberta tar sands at any cost. Ontario will benefit from this new approach to managing our climate, environmental and health impacts. Rebuilding the province’s economy with an emphasis on leadership in energy efficiency, renewable energy and other climate-sensitive technologies can help bring jobs and opportunities to the province in a new global economy where climate matters.
